Sphynx cat portrait with blue scarf
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large portrait of a hairless Sphynx cat, with big blue eyes, large ears and a flowing blue scarf at the base of the design. Bold outlines and smooth colour blocks define the head, with some fine whiskers and faint dotted arcs framing the composition. Vivid blues, oranges, pinks and yellows dominate on the skin, with a partial floral tattoo visible in the top left corner.

The snow found the mule train a mile below the summit, and by the time Ada reached the cairn her fingers had stopped answering to her. The cat did not care for snow either. Bramble, who had no fur to speak of and a temper to match, rode in the top pannier with his big blue eyes narrowed at the sky, and every few minutes he reached up a pink paw to bat at the scarf knotted round Ada's neck, as if it owed him rent.

It was her mother's scarf, cornflower wool gone thin at the ends from years of being wound round a bakery's oven door. Her mother had knitted it the winter before the carrier road closed, and had said that a cold cat was a sad cat, and a sad cat would never forgive a family. Ada had laughed then. She was not laughing now, but she untied it anyway and dropped it over the pannier edge, and Bramble went quiet as he folded himself into the blue.
The pass was not kind to anyone who stopped. The muleteer, Tomas, shouted the last of the directions over the wind: keep the stone wall on the left, follow the blue flag, and do not sit down. Ada kept her eyes on the wall. Behind her the pannier creaked, and somewhere in the white a bell rang where no bell should be, and she realised it was only Bramble, purring like a kettle, the scarf in his teeth as though he meant to carry it the rest of the way himself.
At the inn at Caddon the next morning the scarf was stiff with frost along one edge, and Bramble had slept on it all night. Ada tried to take it back. He gave her one look, flattened his ears, and she left it where it was.
