Child hands with cartoon temporary tattoos
Hand · Colour · Photo
Several pairs of child hands are photographed against a plain white background, each showing a brightly coloured cartoon temporary tattoo. The designs include a cupcake, a lipstick, a donut, a cookie and an ice cream cup, drawn with clean outlines and flat, bold fills. The arrangement is radial, with the hands fanning outwards and the designs repeated as a row of separate transfers along the bottom.

Gwen Tredinnick found the box of transfers wedged behind the cruet on the Thursday, after the coach party had gone and the dining room smelled of vinegar and wet wool. Inside were five sheets of cartoon sweets: a cupcake wearing a cherry hat, a lipstick with a pink smile, a donut dusted with sprinkles like confetti, a cookie that looked faintly cross, and an ice cream cup stacked higher than a lighthouse. On the lid, in biro, someone had written Property of Sandford, Seaside Novelties, and underneath, do not leave on the stairs.

Her grandson Owen, nine and mad for anything sticky, begged to put them on the pier rail. Gwen said no, then yes, then sent him out with a tin of plasters and a warning about the tide. He came back an hour later with wet knees and a grin, and the box was empty. All five had been pressed onto the sea wall, the bench, the lifebelt by the slipway and the rail of the old bathing hut, as if someone had decided where each one belonged.
The next morning the fishermen were grumbling. Ruth Penhallow, who ran the bait shop, said the cookie had got onto her weighing scales and would not come off. Stan from the lifeboat swore the ice cream cup had gone out in the Nora May and come back in her wake with its cherry still on top. Gwen went down to look for herself and found the cupcake on the harbour wall, still smiling at the gulls, while the lipstick had rolled off down the slipway and lay on the shingle, pointing at the sea.
Nobody could say how the stickers had got about. Gwen only knew that when she went to clear the breakfast tables, the box lid sat on the mantelpiece, empty and tidy, and in the bay window a pale pink lipstick had been stuck to the glass, facing out over the water, as though it were waiting for someone to come back for it.
