Pink and chocolate doughnuts on the inner wrist
Forearm · Colour · Photo
Six cartoon doughnuts are arranged across the inner wrist and forearm, with pink frosted, chocolate, and white icing designs, some with sprinkles and one with a chocolate drizzle. The doughnuts have bold dark outlines and flat colour fills with small highlights, and a few appear to have bites taken out of them. The hand is shown palm up against a plain light background, with the designs spread evenly across the wrist.

You pull in at Salt Wren Junction because the sign says HOT DOUGHNUTS and because the desert has been the same shade of brown for two hours, and nothing else on the road has tried so hard to look cheerful. Inside the tin shed, a woman called Dolores Pike slides trays under a lamp that hums like a trapped wasp. She has pink frosting with sprinkles, chocolate gone glossy in the heat, and white icing zigzagged into a pattern she calls the Rattlesnake, which you suspect she invented to sell more of them.

'Six,' you say, and she counts them into a paper bag, pausing at one with a neat bite out of its side. 'Coyote,' she says, without looking up. 'Very polite coyote. Takes one a day and leaves the rest.' You believe her about as much as you believe the hand-lettered card on the door promising that the air conditioning is working.
Back in the car the bag leaves grease ghosts on the seat. You line the doughnuts along the dashboard in a crooked row, tilting the sun-warm ones away from the glare, and you notice the bites are all the same shape, the width of a small mouth, which is not any coyote's arithmetic. Behind you the shed door bangs. Dolores stands in the doorway with a bite out of her own doughnut, chewing, and she lifts it at you like a toast.
You pull out onto the road with the bag on the passenger seat and sprinkles sliding off the pink ones onto the upholstery. You do not look in the mirror, because you already know she is still waving, and the heat takes her long before you reach the first bend.
