Teacup and teapot on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A teacup and saucer overflowing with blue and pink roses sits above a black and grey teapot with ornate detailing, which pours out a single red rose on a stem with green leaves. The teacup and flowers are in colour, while the teapot is shaded in greys with fine engraved-style linework. The two motifs sit apart on a pale forearm against a plain white background.

Dear Marjorie, the sea gave us a tea service on Tuesday, and I have not known what to do with myself since. The teapot came up in the net of the lobster boat from Crail, wrapped in a bit of sacking, its lid tied on with fishing line by somebody who evidently cared more for the lid than the spout. Mr Lennox wanted to sell it to the antiques man in Anstruther. I told him it had come to the light and so it was mine to keep.

The cup and saucer were nested inside, both chipped at the rim but whole. I filled them with the roses from the wall of the keeper's cottage, the blue ones that never grew true here, and the pink ones Mother planted the year you left. It looked foolish, I admit, a teacup spilling flowers over the edge like a fountain. But the wind had been at the gulls all week and I wanted something in the room that did not moan.
On Sunday, a red rose came in on the tide still on its stem, one bloom with a long green leaf. I set it in the spout of the teapot, because the spout was the only thing left that seemed to want to hold something. Every evening I climb the stairs at six, trim the wick, and look down at the little pot on the sill with its rose leaning out like a question.
I have written three letters this week and sent none. This one I will post with the lamp oil order, so you will know I am still here, still lighting the lamp, and that the tea is strong if you ever come to take a cup with me. Your brother, Tom.
