The linework is smooth and of even weight, with long looping ascenders and descenders that link the lines together. The shipyard whistle went at midnight, which means the night shift is out and the tram lines are empty. I walked up from the works with the letter from the Ardrossan office folded in my coat. They want the signed papers by Friday, and they have stopped asking nicely. I told the clerk what I have told you a hundred times, that the Mary Ellen is not coming back up the Firth without her second mate, and he looked at me as if I had lost a glove and wanted the police to find it.
Then, on the landing, I found the hymn sheet you left in my pocket months ago. Nan's pencil was still in the margin, gone silver with age: even so, it is well with my soul. I always thought it a dreadful song for a funeral. Tonight I stood under the bare bulb and read it three times, until the words stopped belonging to somebody else's grief and became something a person could carry up a flight of stairs without spilling.
I am not asking you to come home. I am asking you to write from Valparaiso, even one line, even if the ink runs where the sea gets into the paper. Sign it the way you always do, the big T with the tail that looks like a fishhook. The geranium is still alive, if you were wondering. Love, Nan
