The reunion was held in the old school hall at Hollin Cross because the roof had been mended the summer before and nobody could agree to pull the place down. Forty-one people came, and most had forgotten where the coat pegs were. Dorothy Vane, who had taught them all their letters for thirty-one years, was wheeled in by her nephew, and she asked that the blackboard be dragged to the front.

Nobody had told her there would be speeches. The committee had printed a programme full of hopes, and Gary Fenwick, who had once set fire to the bins behind the gym, stood up with his notes shaking. Dorothy waited until he sat down. Then she took the chalk from the tray, worn to a stub, and wrote in capitals the way she always had: HIS across the top, IS SUFFICIENT along the bottom.
Between the two she drew straight lines with the edge of a ruler, and in the gap she wrote the one word that mattered, in running script, letting the loops run past the edge of the board and out over the sill. Someone said it looked like a sum. Someone else said it looked like a hymn. Dorothy only tapped the middle of it with the chalk and said, "Grace. It goes further than you think."
When the hall had emptied and the caretaker was coiling the cable, Gary found the chalk stub on the floor and put it in his coat pocket. He kept it for years, and he never once wrote with it, though he could not have said why.
