The freezer hatch on the Brightwell van had jammed again, so Norma Pike spent the last hour of the afternoon with her arm in the cold box, feeling for the last orange lolly under a drift of frost. Gulls patrolled the car park at Penhallow Bay. Behind her the queue of sunburnt children had gone quiet, the way children do when they are deciding whether to cry.

The lolly she found was the odd one, the mould that had come out crooked at the factory, with a notch already bitten from one top corner. Nobody had bought it since Tuesday. A boy called Terry Vell had taken one bite, looked at the sea, and handed it back with a face like a verdict. Norma had kept it in the freezer out of spite, and now she held it up to the light like a jeweller checking a stone.

'Sixty pence for the bitten one,' she told the boy at the front, who was about nine and wore his swimming trunks over his jeans. He counted his coins into her palm with a sweaty fist. 'It's been waiting for you,' she said, which was rubbish, and he knew it, and he took it anyway.

He ate it sitting on the harbour wall, licking orange down his wrist, and by the time the van pulled away the bite had softened into a neat little step of melted sugar. Norma watched him in the wing mirror until the wall was empty. Then she shut the hatch, checked the freezer, and found she had nothing left to sell but the stick.
