Hang loose hand sign on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small black line tattoo of a hand making the hang loose gesture, with the thumb and little finger extended, sits on the side of a foot near the ankle. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the design is shown in black ink only. A paper card bearing a larger outline drawing of the same hand sign sits beside the tattoo.

The rain came in sideways over Porthcothan just as the vicar reached the vows, and nobody in the marquee could hear a word. Auntie Joan gave up and waved her order of service at the sky like a surrender flag. I stood by the gate with a box of confetti that had turned to porridge in my hands, watching the lane for the lorry that was meant to bring the flowers.

Ruth had drawn the hand herself, the week before, on the back of a beer mat at the Ship. Thumb and little finger out, the other three folded tight, the way her dad used to thank every driver who let him pull out at the roundabout. He'd died in March with his wheel still in the glovebox. She didn't want a speech. She wanted the gesture, and she wanted it small, so only the people who knew would clock it. Tom had practised the shape in pencil for days, pressing too hard until the paper tore.

When the vows finished, the cloud split open over the cliffs for about the length of a kiss, and half the tent stepped outside to look. Just beyond the hedge a flatbed lorry was crawling round the bend with the flowers, its cab window wound down. The driver lifted one hand off the wheel and held it out, thumb and little finger flung wide, and the whole wedding party, dripping and laughing, shot their own hands up to answer.

Long after the lorry had turned out of sight, Tom's mum was still standing on the wet grass with her hand in the air, thumb and little finger held out against the light, as if she'd forgotten how to put it down.
