Circular back tattoo in a flower-filled bath

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with dark hair, seen from behind, lies in a bath of milky water scattered with red hibiscus, sunflowers and other petals. A small black tattoo of a circular design with inner linework sits on her upper back, between the shoulder blades. The photograph is top-down with a soft, muted colour grade, and the tattoo is the only ink visible.

The guard at Hallen Crossing lifted the lid of the biscuit tin and frowned at what was inside. Hibiscus, three sunflower heads the size of saucers, a fistful of marigolds, all packed in wet moss since dawn. "Declare these," he said. Marta declared them. Her grandmother had taught her that a border only ever wanted the truth in a form it could stamp.

The flowers were for the Sorensen wedding. The wreath was a ring of wire and blossom meant to float on milk-warm water in the bride's mother's house, a custom nobody in the valley could fully explain anymore. Marta's grandmother had said the circle was there to stop the water from ending. Marta had written that down as superstition at nine and started believing it at fifteen.

The guard turned the tin over, pressed a thumb against a sunflower, and watched a bead of yellow pollen come away on his skin. He looked at it for a long time. Then he stamped the manifest, slid it back across the counter, and said the flowers would keep if they were in water by dark. "Put them somewhere a person can sit with them," he said. "Nothing else keeps."

Marta drove the last forty kilometres with the window down and the tin on the passenger seat, the valley opening ahead like a hand. By dusk the wreath was turning slowly on the bathwater, petals drifting in a ring, and the water, for once, did not seem in any hurry to end.
