Circular emblem with stars on the inner wrist
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo on the inner forearm near the wrist shows a circle enclosing a stylised triangular arrowhead with a small star inside it. Scattered dots and tiny four-point stars surround the left and upper sides of the emblem. The lines are solid and even, with no shading or colour, and the design sits centrally on the skin against a dark patterned background.

Ansel came down the stone road at dusk with a tin lamp and a sack of salt, because his grandmother said the desert kept a ledger and the salt paid the nights. Past the last well the white stones turned grey, and there he stopped each evening to draw.

He drew with a burnt stick on the packed earth: a ring as wide as his arms, and inside it a point like an arrowhead aimed back the way travellers came. In its belly he set a small star, the one his mother had called the lamp-keeper's star. Dust lifted around the ring and settled on his wrists, and the little dots of the night began to gather, one at a time, on the side where the wind came from.
Nobody had told him what the drawing did. One evening a carter named Hollis Vane stopped his mule beside the ring and asked the boy why he was wasting daylight. Ansel said the sky needed a door, and that the star inside would walk you home if you stepped in with salt on your tongue. Hollis laughed, then didn't, because the four-point stars were already out above the ring, close enough to touch.
Ansel licked his thumb and rubbed salt across the stick-marks, and the arrowhead lifted an inch off the ground and held there, pointing north. Hollis led his mule through it that night and was home by morning, though the mule swore they had walked the whole way with stars on their backs. Ansel still draws it every dusk, and leaves a gap at the top open so the next traveller can find the way in.
