Fine line fan on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small outlined fan with radiating ribs and a tassel hangs from a thin stem, drawn in a single dark purple line. The linework is clean and even with no shading, and the design sits centred on the inner wrist against a pale sheet.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The paper fan lay open on the counter between them like a half-finished sunrise, and Edie Marsh could already see the cracked rib that had caused it. Mrs Pryce had carried it in a brown paper bag from the Pier Hall dance and set it down apologising before she had even taken her gloves off.

Edie's workroom smelled of hide glue and cedar shavings. She unpicked the tassel, a frayed cord of plum silk, and tilted the fan toward the lamp. Twelve pearwood ribs radiated from a single pin, and the fourth had snapped clean at its root. 'Can it be mended, or must I find another?' Mrs Pryce asked. 'It can be mended,' Edie said, 'but it will show, the way a knee does after a fall.'

She worked through the afternoon while the bell over the shop door rang for schoolboys wanting string and a widow buying thread. Edie cut a sliver from an old tea chest, bound it to the broken rib with waxed linen, and set the fan under a weight to dry. Somewhere between the second cup of tea and the third, she caught herself humming the foxtrot Mrs Pryce had danced to, the one the dance band played too slowly.

Mrs Pryce came back at closing time. She opened the fan slowly, the way one opens a letter from someone who has been gone a long while, and ran a thumb along the mended rib. 'I rather like the join,' she said. Edie retied the plum tassel, pulled the knot tight, and watched the thin violet lines of the ribs catch the last of the light through the shop window.
