Triangle, circle and lightning bolt on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black line tattoo shows a vertical lightning bolt crossing a circle, which sits inside an open triangle with a straight line running through the lower edge. Small asterisk-like stars are scattered around the lower and upper sides of the design. The linework is thin and even with solid black ink and no shading or colour, set against pale skin on a forearm.

The rain had been coming off the canal since six, and by eleven the tarpaulins over Stall Nine sagged like wet sheets. Mrs Okafor had gone for a tea from the van at the gate and left me with her tray of cracked pocket watches, so I stood under the awning pretending I knew what a Rolex was worth and hoping nobody would ask.

The old man came up the aisle with his collar turned up and his hands tucked inside a carrier bag. He didn't want a watch. He unwrapped a small pewter brooch: a circle set inside an open triangle, a metal rod running straight down through the middle, and a zigzag cut across the ring like a crack in ice. "My father wore that down the pit," he said. "Said it was for luck. I never found out what it was for." He wanted fifteen pounds. I offered ten and he took it without a word, which told me he wasn't really selling it at all.
He left the brooch on my tray and asked me to keep it until Saturday, when his daughter would come for it. Saturday came and the rain stopped and nobody came. Mrs Okafor sold the watches in a lump to a man from Wolverhampton. I kept the brooch in my apron pocket because it was heavier than it looked.
On Sunday morning the sun came over the warehouse roofs and caught the zigzag where the metal had worn thin, and for a moment the bolt flashed white, as if something had been struck and was still ringing. I set the brooch back on the tray beside the watches, and I left it there.
