London skyline line on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single thin black line runs across the forearm, rising and dipping like a heartbeat trace while forming outlines of the London Eye, a tall spire and Tower Bridge. The linework is fine and even, with no shading or fill. The blurred background shows a rain-spotted window overlooking a city skyline with a clock tower, in muted greys and pale tones.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, the lot of you, the soup is going cold and I have not finished. Forty years ago Dennis Carter came up the stairs of our flats in Southwark with a roll of tracing paper under his arm and rain in his hair, and he said he had a drawing for me. I told him I already had a husband. He said he knew that, it was a drawing of London, not of him.

He had done it on the back of a hospital form, one unbroken line. It rose off the river like a pulse: a wheel for the Eye, a spire for the clock, the two towers of the bridge with their walkway strung between. Dennis was on the night ambulance out of Camberwell, and he said that on the long drives back over the water he watched the city go by in its own rhythm, lights up, lights down, and thought a city must have a heartbeat the same as anybody. I asked him if he was being soft. He said yes, and he would keep being soft until I said yes back.

I did not say yes that night. I said he could walk me to the bus, and he did, all the way along the Embankment in the wet, stopping every time the bridge came into view to tell me what the line was doing there. Forty years on, I still hear him counting the rises under his breath when I cannot sleep.

So when the young ones asked me to say a few words, I thought of that drawing. The week it went onto Dennis's arm he held it up to the window so the rain ran across it, and said, there, now it's on me, you can't tidy it away. I have never tidied it away. Raise your glasses to Priya and Tom, who have a longer line ahead of them than most of us, and may it keep good time.
