Fine line black tattoo of a London skyline drawn as a heartbeat line across the inner forearm, with a rainy view of the city behind.

London skyline heartbeat line on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black outline tattoo shows London landmarks, including a ferris wheel and towers, drawn as a single continuous line that rises and falls like an ECG trace. The linework is delicate and unshaded, in black ink only. The forearm fills the right side of the frame, with a blurred, rain-streaked city view of the river and buildings behind it.

Every night in Southwark Park the generator coughs twice before it settles, and I wait for it the way my mother used to wait for the kettle. The Big Dipper has gone to Kent, the waltzer is folded onto its lorry, and all that's left of our little show is the wheel, the backdrop of painted towers, and me with a torch and a tin of enamel.

Our backdrop was painted in 1978 by a man called Lenny Pike, who never once saw the river he drew. Big Ben leans a bit to the left, Tower Bridge has one arch too many, and the wheel in the corner has thirty-two cars because Lenny could never count past that without losing his temper. Last month a boy from the estate stood in front of it and asked if it was real. I told him it was real enough to sell candyfloss under.

The wheel has a pawl that clicks at every car, and at night, with the bulbs off, I lie in the cab and count it. Fifty-two clicks a minute when she's turning slow. It sounds like a machine in a hospital corridor, steady and a little lonely, and I have never told anyone that I find it comforting.

Tonight the wheel stopped at the top with one car still full of rain. I climbed up with the torch and saw the whole of London spread out in grey, the real one, the dome and the spokes of the eye, and the river drawing its long bent line through the lot. When I came down I wrote the skyline on the cab door in enamel, one unbroken stroke, peaks and dips all the way across. Then I went back to the generator and let it cough its way to silence.
