Clock face and pink blossoms on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A small clock face with black Roman numerals and hands sits at the centre of the design, surrounded by pink blossoms and thin green stems. The linework is fine and delicate, with soft pink and green washes filling the flowers and leaves. The tattoo is placed on the arm just below a white knitted sleeve, against a blurred background.

Inside the back panel I found a slip of paper folded small, in his square capitals: BLOSSOM TIME, 4.20. Underneath, in pencil gone silver, was the date of the spring you left for the coast. Pink petals had been pressed flat between the wheels, dry as pastry, and the green stems he painted round the dial were still bright where the varnish had kept the light off them.
I cleaned the movement at the kitchen table with the wireless on, and the petals came apart in my fingers like tissue paper. I didn't throw them out. I tucked them back where he kept them, oiled the pivots, and set the hands so the long one stood at the twelve.
It's ticking now. Every few minutes I catch myself listening for it from the hall. Come home in April if you can, and we'll wind it together and see what time it thinks it is.
