Clothes hanger with script fashion on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black fine line tattoo on the inner forearm, showing a clothes hanger outline with a small loop hook. The word fashion is written in cursive script across the hanger's base, ending in a small heart. The linework is clean and even, with no shading, and the plain pale skin and dark background keep the focus on the design.

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the fire, because this is the one about the wire hanger and the word nobody could say properly. My grandmother's grandmother had it from a woman who dug it out of the old ruins past the salt flats, where the towers still stand with their windows full of nothing. The hanger was bent into a shoulder shape, with a little hook at the top curled like a question mark, and across its base someone had written a word in looping letters. Fashion, it said. Nobody knew what it meant. The finder thought it was a name, a town maybe, or a god of the cloth.

The council argued for a whole season. Old Tamsin the mender said it was a prayer, because her mother always said a garment wanted a proper hanging or it would sulk and shrink. Her rival Oswin said it was a warning, the way you'd write 'keep out' on a door. They hung the hanger on the great post in the square, and every child in the village tried to guess what the little heart at the end of the word was for. A heart, Tamsin insisted, meant somebody had cared which way the shoulders sat.
One autumn a stranger came with a bolt of grey cloth and asked for a coat cut to fit someone who had died in the north. Tamsin measured the cloth, then measured it again, and found the seam would not lie flat unless it hung overnight on the wire. So they hung it. By morning the sleeves had dropped into the shape of a person who had stood tall in them, and nobody spoke for a while.
That's all the hanger did, children. It never made the coat. It only held still long enough for someone to remember the shape. Now bank the fire and go to bed, and if you ever find a bent piece of wire in the rubble, hang something on it before you leave.
