Ohana script on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin, single-line black script reads Ohana across the skin of the arm. The linework is even and delicate with no shading, and the ink is solid black against the light skin. The word sits centred and horizontal on the arm, with the patterned black and white fabric filling the background.

Mam, the boat was late again, so I've had three weeks to write this and no excuse left. The cane fires go up over the ridge every evening now and the whole valley smells of burnt sugar. Ezra Kahale, who runs the mill gang, says I have the hands of a man born underground, which I took as a compliment, though he was laughing when he said it.

I went to Hilo on Saturday with my pay tucked in my boot. There's a man there with a little room above a chandler's, needles standing in jars and old sailors' photographs on the walls. He asked what I wanted and I couldn't say it straight, so I said the word Ezra's wife taught me on my first Sunday, when she fed me until I could hardly stand. Ohana. It means family, and it means nobody gets left behind, not even the ones who are cross with you. I kept seeing Dad coming up the shaft at Wheal Hope with his lamp gone out, and you at the door counting heads.
So that's why there's a word on my arm instead of another letter asking your pardon. I'm not sure I'd have had the nerve to write it otherwise.
Enclosed is the passage money for Ruth and the twins. The ship sails from Honolulu in April and Ezra has already written to the agent. Tell her the ink was dear and the needle stung like a hedgerow nettle. Leave the lamp lit on the step. I'll see it from the water.
