Cloud outline with script word on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A single-needle style outline of a cloud sits on the upper arm, with the word efêmero written in cursive across its lower section so the script runs along the cloud's base. The linework is uniform and black, with no shading or fill, and the lettering flows smoothly through the design. The photo is taken straight on in greyscale, with the cloud centred and a sleeve visible at the edges of the frame.

The chalkboard outside the fish market in Aveiro had been wiped clean by rain three times that week, and Teodora Sá was tired of rewriting the same prices. Her uncle Osório had taught her to letter with a steady hand and a wet sponge, and he had never once minded the weather. "Nothing we make out here is meant to stay," he said, dipping his brush in the bucket. "The gulls don't read it anyway."

She spent the morning on the price of sardines, chalking numbers that dissolved by lunchtime. Rain came in off the lagoon in grey sheets, then cleared to a sky so pale it looked rinsed. An old woman who sold eels from a cart stopped to read the board and frowned at the smudged figures. "Efêmero," she said, tapping the word Osório had painted in the corner, the one that had outlasted every forecast. "It means it passes. My husband used to say that about the weather, and about me."
Teodora thought about that as she worked. The word had been up there since spring, cream on black, and the rain had never touched it because Osório had sealed it under varnish. He said he had painted it as a joke, a warning to tourists who wanted everything to last. She took a stick of chalk and, beneath the fading prices, drew a small cloud, lumpy and loose, and wrote the word through its base so the letters ran along it like a breeze.
By evening the cloud had gone the way clouds go, the chalk softening into the grain of the board. Osório stood beside her with his hands in his pockets and said nothing for a long while. Then he held out the sponge. "Again tomorrow," he said, and she understood it was not a complaint.
