Cloud and lightning bolt on the upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small outlined cloud sits with a partly hidden second cloud behind it, a lightning bolt hanging below and three short ray marks at the upper left. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the tattoo is set against soft, unshaded skin. The photograph is black and white, with the tattoo centred and the rest of the frame blurred.

The barometer in the hall of Seacrest House has been stuck on Change since the spring, and Mrs Pell taps it every morning anyway, as if it might take the hint. You have been there eleven days, long enough to learn that the sea smells different before a squall and that the gulls stop arguing with the bins. Today the sky over the pier has gone the colour of wet slate, and the guests are already drifting to the lounge with their knitting and their ferry timetables.

Mrs Pell finds you on the back step with a biscuit tin of old postcards. She wants you to take the spare room at the top, the one that faces the water, because the boy from the chandlery is coming with a telegram from his brother at sea and somebody has to sit with him. You say yes before she finishes. The attic window rattles, and across the bay a fork of light splits the cloud bank. You count under your breath the way your grandfather taught you. Seven, eight. The thunder arrives like a dropped tray.
The boy comes up the stairs at dusk with his cap in both hands. The telegram is only a list of tides and a line saying the Margaret is making port. You tell him what you know about storms, which is that they pass over, and he looks at you as if you have offered him a coat made of paper. Then the sun breaks through low over the Lancashire flats, one bright slant of it, and the whole bay goes gold for a minute.
He laughs, a little wetly. You fish a sketch out of the postcard tin, a cloud drawn years ago with a bolt hanging beneath it and three short lines at the corner for the sun. Tell him it's a promise, you say. Clouds always have a sun behind them somewhere. He pins it above the washstand, and in the morning, when the Margaret's lights come round the headland, neither of you goes near the barometer.
