Coffee cup with lipstick kiss on forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A line drawing of a cup with a handle, seen from the side, with a solid black coffee surface near the rim. A red kiss mark sits on the cup below the coffee, shaded with textured red ink. The bold black outline is clean and even, set against a plain, light skin background with the tattoo centred on the forearm.

Right, pull your chair in, because the kettle's only just boiled and I'm not telling this twice. You'll know the thick white cups on Ward Four, the ones that never come clean in the machine. I was the lad on nights then, pushing the linen trolley and too daft to be frightened of anything. I asked Sister Ferris who was leaving them. She said Irene, who'd done nights on this ward since the year it opened, and who had retired the spring before with a bad hip and a sensible pair of shoes. Irene, she said, had never once in thirty years walked past a cold cup without taking it to the sink.
So I started leaving a digestive on the saucer for her. Wednesday I found a note tucked under it in capitals: DUNK IT, LOVE, IT'S BETTER HOT OR NOT AT ALL. The next night the biscuit was gone, the cup was washed and waiting, and the lipstick had faded at the edges as if someone had rubbed it with a thumb.
Last week there was no cup. I stood at the sluice with the kettle ticking and felt daft, the way you do when a sound you've learnt to expect simply stops. So I made two teas, black, one for me and one for the sill, and I left the second with its mark turned to the wall, where nobody but the next lad will see it.
