Teacup with steam on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black tattoo of a teacup sits on the inner forearm, with three looping curls of steam rising above the rim. The cup is filled with bold, dense black ink, and the steam is drawn with thinner, flowing lines. The photo is taken straight on and close up, with the wrist and a dark sleeve visible at the edges.

The urn had gone dead on the Tuesday, so Ruth made the tea the old way, in the big brown pot, and carried the first cup across the yard of the Coldharbour depot before the drivers could start grumbling about it.

She kept one cup apart from the rest. It was black enamel, chipped at the rim, with a heavy foot that rang when you set it down, and the other drivers were not allowed to touch it. Arthur Pell took it from her every morning without a word. He had not said much since his wife went off to Scarborough with a man who sold conservatories, but he always held the cup in both hands, as if it might blow away, and he watched the steam lift off in its three slow curls before he drank.
One morning in September the cup came back to the hatch rinsed and upside down on the tray. Underneath it was a ticket for the coastal route, the one the council had cut in 1987, punched neatly at the corner. Ruth turned it over. On the back, in pencil, he had written: Same time tomorrow, if the 14 still runs.
She filled the cup again that afternoon and set it out on the sill where the sun came in low. The steam rose, looped twice, and then drifted out through the open door toward the road that ran down to the sea, and Ruth stood there with the pot cooling in her hands until the bus engines started up one by one in the yard.
