Coloured circles and dots on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A forearm carries a sequence of fine outline circles and small dots in pink, orange, blue, red, green and grey. A larger pink circle is filled with loose diagonal hatching, an orange circle is split down the middle, and the shapes shrink as they step towards the wrist. The bright ink stands out against pale skin and a dark fabric background.

She set the sphere under the lamp and frowned at the loose scribbled hatching across it, which some child had gone over with a biro for reasons nobody would ever explain.

Tomasz came in with two teas and didn't ask what she was doing. He had watched her do this for eleven winters. "The little ones like the rings," he said. "Saturn's the only one that gets a cheer."
She didn't answer. She was thinking about the Thursday before, when a boy called Owen had stood under the dome and asked why the planets didn't fall into the sun. She had said gravity, which was true, and he had said that was only a word, and she had found nothing to say to that. Now she turned the small red sphere on its wire, and the blue ring around it caught the lamp, and the whole thing ran smooth for the first time in months.
By nine the room was dark and the dome hummed. Owen came back to the bench at the end of the session and pointed at the orange sphere. "That one's broken," he said. Dilys set down her screwdriver. "It was split when I got it," she said. "I never had the heart to fix it."
