Colourful lotus flower on the upper back
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
A large lotus flower is tattooed centrally on the upper back, with its petals drawn in loose black outlines and filled with red, pink, purple, orange and teal. Soft, washed-out colour edges and scattered dots give the flower a watercolour-like finish. Three solid circles in orange, teal and red sit in a vertical line beneath the flower.

Orange goes up first, the way it always has, then teal, then the red one with the crack in it that Pell glued twice before he gave up on it. I keep my eyes on the top of each throw and not on the empty benches, because the benches are what I'd remember if I looked at them. Three balls in the air in a field outside Wakefield, with the wind coming off the slag heap and nobody to clap but a dog.

The big top came down on Tuesday. Dorrie painted the lotus on the proscenium cloth the winter I joined, a flower the size of a cartwheel, all loose black lines and washed reds bleeding into the canvas. She said it only opened in muddy water, which struck me as a sentimental thing to say about a show that had never once turned a profit. The cloth went to a man from a scrapyard in a van with no lettering on the side. He folded it like a flag and didn't look up.
So this is the last run, out past the lay-by where the lorries turn. Orange, teal, red. The red one lands in a puddle and flicks a brown spray across my boots, and I laugh out loud, which is the only applause I get all afternoon. I bend for it slowly, one knee on the wet grass, and when I stand the puddle has a skin of oil on it, purple and green, spreading in rings like something coming into bloom. I hold the ball and watch the rings open and open until the whole ground is painted with them, and I think, well, Dorrie, there's your water.
