Umbrella over a heart beneath a storm cloud
Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A black umbrella sits over a red heart with short red radiating lines, while a purple storm cloud above releases blue raindrops and yellow-outlined lightning bolts. Bold black outlines and solid fills give the piece a flat, graphic look, with soft shading on the cloud and umbrella. Partial tattoos of a rose and a further lightning shape appear at the edges of the frame against pale skin.

The storm has been stacking up over the mill since noon, a purple bruise behind the chimneys, and by half past three the lightning is walking down Bell Street like it owns the pavement. You are behind the counter at Tully's Hardware with the shutter half down when Dora Vance comes in shaking water from her hair. She asks for the black umbrella in the window, the one with the bone handle and ribs that snap open like a spider's legs. You tell her it was set aside for the Pruitt boy, who went to Leeds in March and never came back for it.

You take it down anyway. She pays in coppers she counts twice, and when the thunder cracks over the water tower she laughs, a short startled sound, and says she has never once been on time for anything in her life. Outside, the rain is coming sideways off the reservoir and the gutters are roaring. She opens the umbrella under the awning, looks at you over the top of it, and asks whether you're walking her home or standing there being useful with the door.
You walk her home. You hold the umbrella at a slant so the rain runs off your collar instead of hers, and she talks the whole way about her sister's wedding cake, which fell, and the vicar's wife, who did not. At her gate the rain thins to a drizzle. She hands the umbrella back and tells you to keep it, since you are clearly the one who gets soaked. When you reach the corner and shake it out, there is a slip of paper tucked between the ribs, a heart drawn in red pencil, and beneath it, in her careful hand, Tuesday, same time.
