Two palms facing the camera with black block lettering on the fingers, reading COME on the left hand and HOME on the right, in a lettering style on the hand.

COME HOME lettering across fingers

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two open palms show the words COME on the left hand and HOME on the right, with one letter inked on each finger in plain, evenly spaced capitals. The letters are drawn in dark, slightly uneven black linework with little shading, and the skin tone is the only colour against a dark background. The hands fill the frame from top to bottom, with the letters centred on the fingers.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lock-keeper's daughter had been counting the barges past the bend since the thaw, and by midsummer she could tell the Mary Ann from the Perseverance by the sound of their engines alone. Nobody on the towpath could say which way the Sallow Rose would come when it did come. Its owner, Tomas Reddy, had gone downriver with a load of coal and not been seen since, and the boat had been pulled in at Tilling Cut with its tiller tied and its cabin door swinging.

When the rain eased, the girl took her father's rowing skiff out past the weir and found the Sallow Rose drifting in the reeds with a stove still warm and a tin of tea half drunk on the table. On the bench lay a pair of gloves cut off at the fingertips, and written on the inside of each glove, in a careful hand, was a word. She could not read the words from the bank, but when she stood on the foredeck she saw that someone had shown the same letters on their own hands, one to each finger, so that the whole thing could be read by anybody who held up their palms to the lamp.

She did not go to the constable. She sat at the tiller until the light went orange over the water, and then she held up her own hands in the cabin and read them aloud, slowly, the way her father had taught her to read a lock gate. The wind dropped. Somewhere up the cut a bargeman began to whistle. Down on the towpath, a single lamp came on, and then another, and the girl understood that the river had been waiting for her to say it.
