A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bulb went dark on the third night of the gale, and by the fifth I had decided my memory was the one thing on Scarra Head I could no longer trust. So I took the marker from the logbook drawer and wrote the instructions on my palms, the way my mother used to write sums on her wrists. PLACE BULB HERE on the left hand, then the same on the right, in case the rain took the first one.

The supply boat came Thursday with Danny Roke at the tiller. He took one look at my hands and laughed until he had to sit down on a fender. Ink, he said, not marker, or it'll wash off in a week. He knew a lad in Ilfracombe who did lettering on lorry mudguards and would do it proper for a pasty and a bottle of rum.

The lad was called Kieran and he took the job very seriously. He had a steady hand and a fine needle, and he set the three words in neat black blocks, one above the other, on both palms. Only when he'd finished did he hold my hands up under the lamp and frown. Boob, he said. Did you mean bulb? I looked. I had written bulb. My handwriting had been bad for years, and the b and the o had quarrelled on the page.

I could have had it fixed. Instead I climbed back up to the lamp with the new bulb in a tea towel, held my hands flat against the housing, and read the words aloud to the gulls. They looked at me the way gulls do, as though I had lost my wits. By then I was inclined to agree with them, but the light came on at dusk and the boat came round the point, and I never once put the wrong thing in the wrong place.
