Colour tattoo of a grinning orange cartoon monster beneath an AAHH speech bubble, covering the upper arm and shoulder in a bold neo-traditional style.

Cartoon monster and AAHH speech bubble on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large colour tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, showing a grinning orange cartoon monster with big eyes and a wide blue mouth. A comic-style speech bubble above reads AAHH!!! in bold letters, and a sleeve of more characters or background appears below. The bold black outlines, flat fills and bright blue, orange and yellow palette give it a cartoon-inspired look.

Dear Nell,

The big top came down in Wrexham on Tuesday, so we're playing the car park behind the Co-op now, and Mr Pell has sold the elephant to a farm near Ludlow. What's left is us, the trapeze rigging and Gubbins, the orange monster who used to bring the house down in the second half. You'll remember him: the papier-mâché head with saucer eyes and a blue grin wide enough to swallow a bicycle. For eleven years he rose through the trapdoor, looked at the crowd, and bellowed, and the speech board Pell painted for him read AAHH in letters as tall as a man.

Last night there were three people in the stands, two of them asleep. I was on the trapdoor lever, same as always, and when I pulled it the old spring shrieked and Gubbins stuck halfway, his jaw caught on the frame. Pell swore. The crowd laughed, and then the laughing turned into something warmer, and I realised the word on the board was the only honest thing we'd said all season.

Pell wants him gone. A man from Leeds collects cartoon props and has offered four hundred pounds, which is more than we've made in a fortnight. I told Pell I'd take the head myself and sort the jaw. So now he's sitting in my caravan under a tarpaulin, grinning at the damp, and I've started painting a fresh bubble over the old one. It says the same word. I haven't decided whether it's a warning or a cheer.

Love, Ada
