Companion cube with wings and halo on upper back

Back · Mixed · Photo

A grey companion cube with a pink heart at its centre sits on the upper back, shown in a graphic cartoon style. Black outlines form a pair of angel wings on either side and a halo floats above the cube. The cube is shaded in greys with a dark outline, while the heart and a soft pink tint around the design add colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Thursday, late shift, rain coming sideways off the estuary. The woman in the blue hatchback had nothing to declare apart from a grey metal cube the size of a fruit crate, wrapped in a bath towel and belted into the passenger seat. I asked her what it was. She said, 'That's Pip, and she's not a cube, she's a companion.' I asked for paperwork. She handed me a receipt from a charity shop for one unwanted ornament, fifty pence.

Procedure says anything that moves goes to the secondary bay. Instead I peeled back the towel. The cube was scuffed and grey with a dark frame, and a pink heart was painted on its front, worn thin at one corner where a thumb had rubbed it for years. Someone had stuck a ring of silver foil above it, bent slightly out of true, and two wings of folded card were taped to the sides, gone soft as cloth at the creases.

'She doesn't talk back,' the woman said. 'That's the point. You can tell her anything and she never repeats it. My brother called her the stupid one. He drove her round the country for a year before he found his own flat.' She didn't say anything else and I didn't ask. Behind her the queue was building, horns going, a van driver shouting about his ferry.

I wrote the entry the way the form asks. Nature of goods: one companion, pink heart, slightly damaged. Value: nil. Then I looked at the foil halo for a long moment and stamped the windscreen pass with the green mark that means allowed through. 'Go on, then,' I said. She buckled the cube in again and drove off towards the north road, and the rain closed over her tail lights.
