Dear Nell, the lads have finally shifted the dodgems off the common and we're parked up behind the chip van in Ashford, which smells of vinegar and wet canvas but is the nicest pitch we've had since Easter. I've been painting the coconut shy's new board all morning, a white cat with a red bow on one ear, because Dad says the children will spend their pennies on anything with whiskers. Mrs Tully from the candyfloss stall came over and asked whether the cat was taking sides, and I said it was taking none, which she didn't follow.

The peace sign was Ruth's idea. She joined us in Margate with a rucksack full of records and a face like a closed door, and on the second night she sat on the steps of the big wheel and drew the thing in biro on the back of my hand. Dad saw it and said no political nonsense on his stalls. So I put it under the cat instead, three thin lines making a wide mouth and a nose, and nobody can complain about a cat.

Ruth left this morning on the milk lorry, bound for somewhere with a university. She took the spare bow ribbon, which I didn't mind, and she left a note pinned to the shy's back board that said, Keep your whiskers straight. I've decided it's the most sensible thing anyone has said to me all season.
