The officer turned the photograph over twice, as though the back might tell him what the front would not. Ada kept her hands flat on the counter and watched rain run down the window behind him. Her grandmother had drawn the rose on the inside cover of an old map book in faded ink, the W and the S in careful capitals, and the N had blurred to a smudge years ago. Ada had the book in her coat. The officer did not ask about it.

"Purpose of travel?" he said.

"To collect a surveyor's chain from a sale in Lyon," she said. That was partly true. The chain had been sold in 1962, and Ada had only come to see the buyer's face.

He stamped the page and slid it back. Beyond the barrier a lorry idled, its headlamps sweeping the wet tarmac. Ada had asked her grandmother once why she never used the little brass compass on the cover of the book. "It always points the same way," the old woman had said, "so a person who knows north never has to ask where she is."

Ada walked through the gate without looking back. In her pocket the brass compass shivered, found its line and held steady. It pointed south, towards the hills where the rose had first been drawn on the back of a letter nobody answered. At the far booth she opened the book at the rose and wrote one word beneath the S: Arrived.
