Compass rose with 'Create your own path' on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bold black compass rose with a dotted circle sits at the centre of the forearm, with N, E, S and W marked at the cardinal points. The words 'Create your own path' curve around the compass in a traditional lettering style, with the top line above and the bottom line below. The tattoo is rendered in solid black ink with no grey shading, photographed straight on against a plain skin tone and a blurred indoor background.

The second lorry had blown a tyre outside Thirsk, and Noor sat on its tailgate with a pencil behind one ear, doing sums on the back of a faded poster. Forty-one pounds for diesel. Nine pounds for hay for Duchess, the grey pony who had replaced the elephant and never once been asked to be anything else. The sun was sinking over the lay-by, and the other wagon had already gone on without them, its brake lights shrinking towards the A1.

Her grandfather's compass lay warm in her palm, the brass worn soft from thumbing. He had bought it in 1962 from a sailor in Grimsby, and he had painted the show's words along the side of the big top in letters that wobbled like tightrope walkers: CREATE YOUR OWN PATH. Back then there had been forty performers and a brass band. Now there was Noor, her cousin Tobias who juggled badly, and Mrs Kell, who sold teas from a hatch and kept the books in pencil.
Tobias wandered over, saying the satnav wanted them back on the motorway. "Satnav wants a lot of things," Noor said. She flipped the lid and let the needle settle. North pointed up the lay-by, past a rusted gate, onto a lane the map had given up on, a thin dotted line through the moor with no name at all. Mrs Kell had once driven it with a dancing bear and never stopped talking about the view.
They changed the tyre by torchlight. Noor took the wheel of the pony wagon, the compass propped on the dashboard, and they bumped up the unnamed track past two cattle grids and a sheep that refused to move. The headlights found a field with a five-bar gate, and someone had chalked a board and hung it there, the letters leaning but legible: TONIGHT, ONE RING, ALL WELCOME.
