Constellation and triangle fine line tattoo on side
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a small fine line tattoo showing a constellation of star-shaped dots joined by thin lines, with a small open triangle to the left and a small circle with a central dot to the upper right. The linework is delicate and even, in black ink on pale skin, with no shading. A hand with pale nail polish rests at the top edge of the frame, and the tattoo sits on the side of the body against a plain background.

Nobody on the eleventh floor of Calder House could say when the lift had last worked, so the children took the stairs and counted the landings out loud. Ruth Abara kept a telescope in a bin bag under her bed, and every clear night she dragged it up to the roof, where the wind pulled at her coat and the flats below went dark one window at a time.

The old men on the fourth floor said the stars over the estate were a fishing net that had snagged on the tower and never come free. Ruth thought it was a ladder, because she had counted seven rungs from the bottom step up to the lamp on the roof, and each one was lit. Her brother Dele swore it was a plough. He was nine and wrong about most things, but he was right that the stars seemed to move if you looked away and then back again.
In February the lamp on the roof blew out in a storm, and the council did not come for three weeks. Ruth went up anyway with a torch and a tin of white paint. She painted a small open triangle on the parapet for the wedge of moon that had gone missing that week, and a circle with a dot in its middle for the lamp itself. Then she pointed the telescope at the sky and told the others where to look.
By spring the whole block knew the shape. When a man on the ground floor fell ill, the neighbours left bread on the fourth step with a mark chalked beside it, and the children climbed the stairs in the dark, counting the rungs under their breath until they found the door.
