Dear Nell, the Pippin tree by the back wall has finally dropped its windfalls, and Dad has been out every morning with the barrow, grumbling that the wasps are getting fat on them. I told him wasps have more sense than to crawl about in the grass for a bruised apple, but he says they have the same sweet tooth as everything else in this county. That got me thinking of the biscuit tin you kept under your bed, the one with the blue furry fellow on its lid, two white eyes wide as saucers, who never once in his life stopped at one biscuit.

I found the tin in the shed on Tuesday, rusted at the hinges and still smelling faintly of ginger. Under the lid, in your handwriting, you'd written WHO TOOK THE LAST ONE in pencil, and underneath, in mine, NOT ME. We were eight and ten and we were both lying, and the fellow on the lid was clearly guilty. I sat on the upturned crate for an hour with it on my knees, thinking how little it takes to keep a grudge going for thirty years.
So I baked a batch, badly, because the oven in the cottage runs hot on the left. Dad saw me carrying the tray down the orchard path and asked what on earth I was doing, feeding the wasps. I said yes, more or less. I left three on the top of the old stone wall, under the Pippin, where the wasps could find them if they went looking.
Come for the harvest if you can. Bring the tin, and bring your own story about who took the last one, because I've decided I'm not going to argue about it any more. Love, Mags.
