By the third week of August the Fun Palace cabinet had taken more of my paper-round money than my mum would ever hear about, and Dennis, who ran the arcade from a cubby behind the change machine, had started calling me the Bank of Pier Road. I didn't mind. The yellow fellow on the screen never stopped eating, and I admired that in a character.

The ghosts were the trouble. Four of them, painted in colours that didn't quite match the flashing sign over the door, and each one wanted the same thing I did, which was to catch the little yellow man before he cleared the maze. Dennis said the trick was to stop staring at the ghosts and watch the gaps between them. I told him I'd believe it when I saw it, and he laughed so hard he had to sit down on his stool.

On the last Friday of the month I had one fifty pence piece left, bent at the edge from being pressed against a bus fare, and I slid it in without thinking. The maze came up. I ate every dot on the board while the ghosts chased me round in their silly circles, and when the screen flashed and the score rolled over to a number I'd never seen, Dennis came out from behind the counter with his hands in the air like a referee. He typed in my initials, got them wrong, and never fixed them.

I walked home along the prom with empty pockets and the sea doing its usual business on the shingle. Behind me the machine was still playing its tune for nobody, and the next kid with a bent coin would find the same yellow man waiting, mouth open, hungry for whatever came next.
