Our Dan went down the Ashfield shaft at ten to ten, same as every night shift that winter, with his lamp clipped to his cap and his snap tin knocking against his hip. I stood on the step in my dressing gown until the lamplight at the top of the lane had gone the way it always went, round the corner by the chapel, and then I went in and banked the range.

The kitchen wall had a Co-op calendar pinned beside the back door, and every night I put a little pencil crescent in the corner of the day, the way my mother had when my father was on the coal. She never told me it helped. I only ever saw her do it with her thumb pressed hard on the pencil, as if the moon might rub out.

Dan came up at six with coal dust in the creases of his neck and said nothing about the roof falls at the far face, only that the men had sung on the cage going up, which they did when they were glad. He ate his bacon standing at the sink. I asked him what the night had been like and he said, "Long," the way he always said it.

Then he took the pencil off the windowsill, leaned over the calendar, and wrote two words under the moon in his square capitals, good night, though it was morning and he had only just come off shift. He laughed at himself and said the men would have plenty to say about that. I still have the calendar. The crescent is there, and the words, and the ink has gone faint in the corner where the sun reaches it.
