Fine line geometric design of two overlapping circles crossed by a horizontal line, with the overlap filled in solid black, shown without a body placement.

Overlapping circles on a horizontal line

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

The design shows a thin horizontal line crossing two overlapping circles, one smaller than the other. The lens-shaped overlap is filled with solid black ink that has a slightly grainy texture, while the rest is drawn in single-weight outline. The composition is centred on a plain pale background with generous empty space around the motif.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tomas had been sent to the ruin with a brass theodolite, a surveyor's chain and a letter from the estate saying the keep was to come down before the spring. He set the instrument on the flagstones of the inner ward, where nettles grew through the joints, and sighted level across the valley to the church spire at Ashby Moor. The spire had to sit square in the crosshairs with the broken arch of the gatehouse, or the new road would bend a quarter mile for nothing.

His sister Ilse kept the ledger on her knee and read him the figures as he called them. Behind them the sun was climbing the eastern wall, and a jackdaw went up out of the ivy like a thrown stone. "The old steward wrote that the dark came across this gap every midsummer," she said, turning a page as brittle as onion skin. "Two discs, one small and one large, and where they lay over each other the grass never greened."

Tomas looked. In the shadow thrown by the curtain wall lay a patch of ground the size of a cartwheel, grey and bare, shaped like a seed and crossed by the line of his sight. He had taken it for old scorch. Ilse walked out and knelt, pressing her palm to it, and when she looked up her hand was cool even in the sun.

He nudged the theodolite a hand's width to the left, so the spire slid off the gatehouse and onto the grey patch. "Leave it," he said. He wrote in the margin of the estate letter that the road would bend after all, and under it he copied the date the steward had cut into the stone beside him, then folded the paper small and put it in his boot.
