Crescent moon and star on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo of a crescent moon sits on the outer upper arm, with a small outlined five-pointed star to its right. The moon is filled with fine floral and paisley-like ornament drawn in thin, dense linework, with the star left open in simple outline. The skin is warm-toned and the background is dark, with a striped cream fabric draped across the shoulder.

Dear Tomas, the tin lantern you left on the counter has been sitting by the till since Tuesday, and every customer who comes in asks about it. I told Mrs Pardoe it was a lamp from the Levant trade, which is a lie, but she's from Penzance and has never been further than Plymouth, so she believed me. The moon on it has been punched through with a hundred tiny holes, and when I light the wick the light comes out in lace across the wall behind the bottles of linseed oil.

I did what you said and took it down to the slipway on Thursday night to see the star work. The boats were all in, the fog was sitting on the harbour mouth like wet wool, and the scrollwork on the moon threw shadows across the cobbles that looked like somebody's grandmother's shawl laid out to dry. Old Esther from the net loft came down with her torch and stood beside me without saying a word. When the lamp swung on its hook, she said the pattern looked like the inside of a seed, all curled up and waiting, and she was right, and I hadn't thought of it that way.
I have not sold it. I have not sold it to Mrs Pardoe, nor to the man from Falmouth who offered me forty pounds on Friday. I have hung it on the nail beside the door, where the tide tables used to go, and I have put the tables in the drawer. You'll be back for the spring fitting, you said. I'll keep the wick trimmed.
