Crescent moon and sun on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small tattoo of a crescent moon beside a sun with rays sits on the wrist of a hand resting on denim. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is a single purple or violet tone with no shading. The photo is framed close, with a cream knitted jumper sleeve and dark hair filling the lower part of the image.

The almanac had to be finished before the Thursday tide, and Maud had only the violet ink left in her mother's bottle to mark the printer's proofs. Every page carried the same small pair in the margin: a crescent moon and a sun with its rays drawn as thin spokes. Her mother had insisted on them. Where the two symbols sat side by side, the harbour master said, the boats could be trusted to come home on the same flood.

Danny Roe came in off the Ellen with his cap in his hands and said the fish had gone east. He wanted her to say the tide would turn for him, and she wouldn't, because the tables did not care what a man wanted. She ran her finger down the column for the week. The moon came early, the sun came late, and for three days they crossed at a point no printer had ever set right.
She took the pen and drew the two symbols again, smaller, the moon a hair's width from the sun and not one line touching. Danny asked what that meant. She told him it meant the sea and the sky had agreed to keep their distance and still get the job done, which was more than most families managed.
When the proofs came back she left the margin as it was. The printer wrote asking whether the purple was a mistake. Maud wrote back that it was the ink her mother had used, and posted the pages on Monday.
