Black curl tattoo on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A pale hand is clenched against a black background, with the wrist and lower forearm lit from the side. Two small black tattoo lines curl at their ends, one above the other, sitting on the inner forearm close to the wrist. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is solid black with no colour, shown in a simple, minimal composition.

Dear Tom,

The 6.14 was late again this morning, so I had a long look at the bench on platform two while I waited. Someone has scratched two small curls into the green paint on the end slat, one sitting above the other, like the scrolls on the cello you carried through this station every Thursday for three years. Mr Okafor blames the Doncaster lads, but I know a bow-hand when I see one, even in a carving.
The stationmaster has pinned a notice to the lost property board. Yesterday a woman left a violin case on the seat by the ticket window and walked off without it. I put it in the office cupboard beside the bag of mail, and at four o'clock I opened it, only to check the strings were not hanging loose from the damp. There was no instrument inside, just a folded timetable from 1998 and a pencilled note: 'Keep the seat warm for the one who waits.' I did not know whether to laugh or cry, so I did both, in the cupboard, which is no place to do either.
The porters have started calling your bench the musicians' seat. Ruth from the buffet says it's bad luck to sit on it before a delayed train, so I sit there every evening instead, with my flask and my feet on the rail, humming the tune you always hummed, the one that climbs and then curls back on itself. Nobody has asked me why.
If you do come back, come on a Thursday. I'll be on platform two with two cups, and I won't pretend I wasn't watching the rails.
Your loving sister, Ada
