Crescent moon tarot card on ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A small framed tarot-style card sits on the side of the ribcage, showing a grey crescent moon with a face on a teal background. The linework is a thin dark outline with soft grey shading on the moon, and small lettering sits along the bottom edge of the card. The composition is a side view with the arm folded across the body and soft daylight from a window on the left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The moon kept coming out sly, and Ruth wiped it off the card three times before she let herself admit why. Her brother Dev had already called it a cheat. He ran the sign shop on the high street and didn't believe in anything he couldn't price by the square foot. "It's a moon, Ruth, not a magistrate," he said, leaning over the bench with his tea. She said the old deck had been painted by a woman who'd known her customers were lonely, and that the face ought to look like it was keeping a secret for them, not judging them.

She worked through the wet week. The teal went on in three coats so the sea-glass colour would hold under the booth's bulb. The crescent came next, pale as a fish belly, shaded at the hollow with a grey so soft it looked breathed on. When the power failed on Thursday she kept going by torchlight, the card propped against a jar of brushes, rain ticking on the pier boards above her head.

On Saturday a girl came into the booth with her hands in her coat pockets and asked what the moon meant. Mrs Tennant, who ran the booth and had never once read a card straight, told her the moon was for things that hadn't surfaced yet. The girl turned the card over, looked at the small words along its foot, then put it back face up and smiled at the sleepy grey face as though it had winked. Ruth, behind the curtain, put her brush in the water and left the moon exactly as it was.
