Cross, heartbeat and heart on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo on the inner wrist shows a cross on the left, followed by a heartbeat trace that rises and falls before curving into an open heart on the right. Small capital lettering reading FAITH, HOPE and LOVE, separated by dots, sits beneath the design. The linework is thin and even against a pale hand, with the background of blurred green foliage and bright sky.

The trace on bed six had been wobbling for an hour before Sister Agnes Porteous looked up from her crossword and saw the paper curling off the edge of the desk. She tore off the strip, held it under the lamp at the nurses' station and tutted at the peaks the way she tutted at anyone who left a kettle on. Cyril, the lanky porter from Hull, leaned over her shoulder and asked whether it was bad news.

"It's just a heart being a heart," she said. Her mother had kept rolls like this in a Quality Street tin, every printout from the old infirmary in Wolverhampton, and she had once told Agnes that the spikes were the body admitting it had been frightened and getting on with things anyway. The little brass cross on Agnes's cardigan had been her mother's too. Cyril wanted to know what the words were for, the three of them in capitals under the drawing. Agnes said they were what you wrote on the back of a card when you had run out of things to say.
Down the corridor the monitor chirped twice and settled. Agnes drew a small pencil heart in the margin of the strip, then a cross beside it, then ran her thumb along the wavering line until the ink smudged grey. Nobody on the ward would have called it a miracle. The old man in six had simply rolled over and gone back to snoring, and somebody had to sign the sheet.
At six o'clock the day staff came up the stairs with their wet coats, and Agnes folded the strip into her pocket beside the cross. She kept it there all morning, and when she finally got home she pressed it flat inside her hymn book, where it stayed for years.
