The rule on the staffroom whiteboard, which I have never once rubbed out, is that nothing can be greater than i. You cannot set the imaginary unit against a real number and ask which is bigger, because the question has no answer. My brother Hedley found this the funniest thing he had ever been told. He was nineteen when he wrote HE>i on the back of a bus ticket and posted it to me from Wigan, underlined twice, with a biro drawing of a calculator looking pleased with itself.

We grew up in a flat above the chip shop on Standish Street, where our mother did the books and Hedley did everything else. I taught him long division on the kitchen table with the radio on. He taught me that a sum can be argued with if you are stubborn enough, and he was the most stubborn person I have ever known. Whenever I told him the inequality was meaningless he would tap the ticket, which he kept in his wallet until it went soft as cloth, and say that meaningless was not the same as false.

Last term a girl in Year Ten put her hand up while I was explaining complex planes and asked why I kept writing that little sign on the board. I gave her the answer from the textbook. She frowned and said her gran had told her the same thing about her own brother, and that it had never stopped being true. I didn't have a reply ready. I picked up the marker, wrote HE>i beside the rule, and left it there for the cleaners to find.
