Heartbeat line and heart on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink heartbeat line rises from the left, forms a small cross and then dips into an outlined heart on the inner wrist. The words FAITH, HOPE and LOVE are set in small spaced capitals beneath, separated by dots. The thin, even linework is shown in black ink against light skin, with a soft blurred background of pale paving and a warm sunlit tone.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dilys had the ovens lit by half four, the way she had every morning since Ray stopped being able to do it, and when the kitchen was warm enough to sweat she pinned the strip of paper above the proving cabinet. It was a length of ECG trace from the cardiac ward, folded soft at the creases. Ray had asked the nurse for it the morning they let him home, and he had hung it over the cabinet with a drawing pin and said the yeast would like to see something steady.

The line climbed in sharp teeth, crossed itself once like a man making a sign at a funeral, then settled into a long plain run before the nurse drew a little heart in biro over the last complex. Ray called that cheating. Dilys called it a kindness, and they had argued about it for years in the easy way couples argue about nothing much.

Owen from the paper round came in at ten past six, cheeks red from the cold, and pointed at the paper with a floury finger. "Why's there a heart on the wall, Mrs Pritchard?" She told him it was keeping time, and that she had never once baked without it. He had read three words on the edge of a poster and wanted to know what they were for, so she explained: faith that the dough will rise, hope that it bakes through, and love for whoever ends up eating it.

She scored a cross into the top of the last tin loaf, slid it onto the rack, and watched the first grey light move over the market hall roof while the heart on the paper kept its small, steady count above the cabinet.
