Cross, heartbeat and heart on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black tattoo on the upper back shows a cross on the left, joined by a heartbeat line that rises into an outlined heart on the right. The words FAITH, HOPE and LOVE sit in small spaced capitals beneath the design. The ink is solid black on a light skin tone, with a blurred outdoor background and a pink patterned bra strap visible.

The monitor above bed four drew a green line that jumped whenever Mr Penhale told a lie, and he told a great many on the night shift, mostly about the trawler he'd sailed on in 1971 and the size of the cod. I had learned to read him the way I read the drip charts, with one eye on his face and one on the screen.

Nell, his granddaughter, had left a biro and a pad of ward leaflets on the locker. At half past one she was copying the trace onto the back of a discharge sheet, tongue between her teeth, while the tea trolley rattled past the open door. 'That one's a whale,' her grandad said, and the line shot straight up, and we all laughed, even the porter.
At four the ward went quiet in the way it only does after the last pain relief round. Mr Penhale woke and asked me to read the card propped against his water jug, the one his wife had embroidered in red thread before she died. I read it slowly: faith, hope, love. He nodded and said the middle word was the one he'd never managed to keep hold of.
The line rose and settled, rose and settled, steady as a sea on a calm morning. I didn't tell him that. I took Nell's pen, found the highest point on her drawing and drew a small heart beside it, then clipped the leaflet to his rail so he would see it when he woke.
