Cross-stitch style rose on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A large rose head with green leaves is built entirely from small X shapes, giving the look of cross-stitch embroidery on skin. The rose uses soft pink, peach and coral stitches, while the leaves and stems use mint green and teal with darker accents. The design sits across the outer thigh, with a grey skirt draped over the top edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Margaret had counted the stitches twice before the band struck up, and still the rose came out lopsided at the top, where the bare bulb over the cloakroom door gave her too little light. She bit the thread, held the sampler against her chest, and listened to the foxtrot rattling through the floorboards of the Co-operative Hall. Her sister Ada was downstairs pinning a hem with her mouth full of pins and had promised to be quick.

Downstairs the dancers were already sweating through their best. A man in a demob suit kept treading on a girl's green shoes and apologising to the bandleader. Margaret thought of the thread she had bought from Mrs Abbott's shop, peach and coral for the petals, mint and teal for the leaves, the cheapest skeins in the drawer and the only colours left after the good pinks went to the Red Cross. Mrs Abbott had said the greens were too bright for a Tuesday. Margaret had said that was rather the point.

Ada came up the back stairs with her cheeks pink from the heat and a length of blue crepe over her arm. She looked at the sampler, then at Margaret, and said nothing for a long moment. Then she unfolded the crepe, turned back the hem, and held out her hand for the needle.

That night Margaret watched from the edge of the floor while Ada danced with the demob suit, all swing and no fuss. Every time she turned, the hem lifted and the stitched rose flashed up from the inside edge, small and bright and stubborn, where only Ada could see it.
