Crossed arrows on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised fist is shown against a clear blue sky, with the forearm extending down the frame. On the inner wrist and forearm sits a thin black tattoo of four arrows, pointing up, down, left and right, joined by a single straight line through the centre. The linework is crisp and even, the ink is solid black with no shading, and the warm skin tones contrast with the blue background.

Dear Mags, the wind has gone round to the north-west again and the gulls have given up on the bins, so I have been sat at the lamp room window with the logbook and nothing to log. The relief boat is due Thursday if the swell allows. Tell the harbour master I will not be chasing his cat off the landing stage a second time.

The signal mast still points where it did when your father painted it, four arms on a crosspiece, each one a flag pole with a little arrowhead nailed to the tip so the coastguard can tell up from down from across the bay. You asked me last summer why the arrows all go off in different directions when we only ever need one to say the tide is turning. I said it was for the ships that come from every side. I have since worked out that I only said it because I could not remember.
Thursday came and went with no boat. This morning I climbed the mast with a pot of black paint and a brush you would be ashamed of, and I touched up the arrows where the salt had eaten them. My hands shook the whole time, but the lines came out straight. I think I have got the crosspiece back where it belongs. Come and see it before the next storm takes it, and bring the good tea.
