Crown and heart banner flash design
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A black outline drawing of a tattoo design centred on a heart pierced by a dagger, with a crown above and a ribboned banner across the middle reading CRAFTY. Two stars and curling swirl ornaments frame the composition on either side. The linework is bold and even, with no shading or fill, and the image is shown in black on white.

The crown was Mick's idea, and he was still defending it on the pavement outside Ruby's chip shop when the rain started. Dolores Vane had her back against the shutter and a Woodbine going soggy between two fingers. "Crown means we're not beggars," Mick said. "Crown means we've got taste." She told him a crown on a heart was what you drew when you wanted the bank manager to lend you money, and he laughed so hard he dropped the tin.

The tin had forty-one pounds in it, most of it sixpences from the Saturday dance at the Co-op hall. The plan had been simple: buy the stall at Tuesday's market off Mrs Haddow, who was going to Margate to live with her sister and had no use for a brass till or a wooden cabinet of glass eyes. Mrs Haddow wanted cash, not promises. Mick had promises by the bucketful. Dolores had the tin.
She counted it again under the awning while he went off to find the banner man who owed him a favour. The coins were warm from her pocket. Across the road a dog trotted past with a sausage roll, and a bus sighed at the stop. Her own name looked back at her from a scrap of sign-paper she had folded into the lid: CRAFTY, in capitals she had copied off a sailor's arm years ago, when sailors still came up the high street with their sleeves rolled.
Mick came back with the banner man, a stranger with a cough, and a new tin of his own, which he slapped down beside hers. "Forty-one plus nine," he said. "Fifty. Mrs Haddow will take fifty." Dolores looked at the second tin, then at the sky, which had cleared over the gasworks into a thin pink strip. "Fifty," she said. "Then you can tell her about the crown yourself."
