Crowned cat on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A grey and black cat with yellow eyes and white whiskers sits within a rounded frame, wearing a gold crown at the top. The outlines are bold and the fur is built up with soft grey shading and fine strokes. A red background behind the cat adds contrast with the gold and yellow tones.

Nobody at Hollinbrook knew where he came from. He was grey as wet slate, with white whiskers stiff as a good brush and eyes the colour of the brass lamps. He sat on the bench beside the ticket office and watched the 6.12 pull in as if he had ordered it himself. The porters called him Your Majesty as a joke, and then they stopped joking, because the trains ran to time whenever he was sitting there, and the pigeons kept off the waiting room roof.
In March the lost property box was emptied and a gold paper crown from a Christmas cracker turned up among the umbrellas. Ada Lusk, who ran the newspaper kiosk, set it on his head to see what would happen. He allowed it. He allowed it every morning after that, and by summer he would not sit down without it.
The year the line closed, men in orange jackets came with clipboards and measuring tapes. The cat walked slowly to the far end of platform four and looked back at us, the lamps reflected in those yellow eyes. Then he sat down on the last bench in the sun. Next morning the bench was bare, and the crown lay folded on it, neat as a letter that had been written to us.
