Cartoon cat tattoos on two feet
Other · Colour · Photo
Two colour tattoos of a cartoon cat character sit on the top of each foot. The left foot shows the cat wearing a large bow, surrounded by sweets, a cake, a strawberry and a cheese wedge on a pale blue watercolour wash. The right foot shows the cat in round glasses and a checked outfit beside a cluster of balloons and a small pink creature on a green background. Bold black outlines and soft shading give the piece a playful, illustrative look.

The lamp had been dark for three nights when Biscuit finally found the spare mantles, wedged behind the cheese crate where Mr Pell always kept them. She nudged the crate aside, sneezed at the dust, and sat back to consider the stairs. A hundred and twelve of them, spiralling up the tower like the inside of a snail shell, and her round spectacles kept sliding down her nose every time she turned the bend.

Halfway up she stopped to rest on a step worn smooth by Mr Pell's boots and by nobody else's. Through the slit window she could see the fishing fleet dragging its nets home through the murk, and a bunch of balloons that some child had tied to the gallery rail that afternoon bumping together in the wind like nervous guests. One was shaped like a pear. Biscuit thought it looked hungry. She ate the strawberry sweet she had been saving in her waistcoat pocket, then carried on climbing, because a pear-shaped balloon was never going to find the harbour on its own.
At the top the lamp mechanism clicked and groaned. She fitted the mantle with the care Mr Pell had taught her, one paw steadying the glass while the other twisted the brass, and when the flame caught it threw a gold stripe across the water as far as the rocks at Gull Point. Out in the fog a small boat changed course. Its lantern swung, then steadied, then pointed straight at her.
Biscuit licked the last crumbs of cheese from her whiskers and settled on the gallery with the balloons knocking gently at her ears. Mr Pell would be cross about the crate, and about the sweets, and about the glasses, which she had pushed up onto her forehead for the mantle and then forgotten. She would hear all of it in the morning. For now the boat was coming home, the light was doing its job, and that was enough to be going on with.
