Two cat face portraits on calves

Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

Two cat face portraits sit side by side on the lower legs, each with large, detailed eyes, a small nose and fine whiskers. The shading is soft and smooth, with darker tones on the fur and lighter areas on the muzzles and foreheads. The image is framed close on the legs against a plain background, so both tattoos are shown clearly.

Dear Mags,

They let the cats through in the end, though the officer at Halden Gate made me sign three forms and hold Biscuit's carrier on my knee while he checked the stamp on her papers twice. Tilly took it worse. She yowled the whole way across the lot, and I thought of you, because you always said she had a voice like a rusty hinge.

The lorry driver in the next bay gave us a thermos of tea and told me his own cat had once ridden from Gdansk to Glasgow under his seat. I didn't believe him, but I liked him for saying it. We sat on the kerb while the light went orange over the fences, and I kept noticing how alike the pair of them look when they're both pressed against the mesh, ears flat, eyes gone enormous at all the noise.

Nobody asked which one was the sister. That was what I'd been dreading, the questions about what was theirs and what was mine. Instead the clerk just wrote two names on one line and waved us through.

So I'm writing from the far side with my shoes still gritty and two very cross cats asleep on the spare bed. Come on Sunday. Bring the good tin. They've earned it, and so have we.

Love, Jen
